The Importance of Diamond Cutting and Proportioning

No matter where you purchase your diamond, the most important consideration that you should make is cut and proportioning of your diamond. Let's face it, a diamond is meant to be flashy. What I call the flash for the cash. Who wants to be standing around at a party and have a big'ol ugly white diamond rock on your hand? Nobody. You want everyone around the room to keep looking at your hand, neck, ears, etc...to try and find out what is flashing so brightly at them from across the room. The difference between the big'ol ugly diamond rock and the bright flashy diamond is how well the diamond has been cut and proportioned.

Here below three articles, the product of a major GIA research effort that began in the late 1980s, tackled an extraordinarily complex issue and challenged some of the diamond industry’s most widely held perceptions about cut proportions.

GIA Diamond Cut Grading System - 2005

With advances in computer modeling, we have been able to unlock the mystery of diamond cut — arguably the most complex and contested of the 4Cs. After more than 15 years of research and discovery, GIA has developed a scientific way to assess — and predict — the cut quality in round brilliant cut diamonds. More>>>>>>>

Bottom line about diamond proportioning........its the most important consideration when shopping for a diamond. And one more point....ever have two jewelers tell you that they could each get you a diamond with the same clarity and color, but one jeweler's price was much less than the second jeweler? The difference is proportioning. Proportioning greatly affects price. So be sure that you are looking at all three grades when you shop....not just clarity and color. Ask for a proportioning grade.
